Omah Lay grew up in Port Harcourt, a city in Nigeria. He was born on May 19, 1997, and he is originally from Egbeda, Emohua, which is in the Rivers Local Government Area of Rivers State. He completed his high school education at Comprehensive High School in Rivers State and later attended the University of Port Harcourt.
Omah Lay comes from a musical family, with a strong musical background. His grandfather used to play instruments for the singer Celestine Ukwu before his passing in 1977. Additionally, Omah Lay's father is skilled in playing the drums, further adding to the musical influence in his life.

On 14th February 2020, he released "You," which was his first official single. His debut EP, Get Layd, was released on 22nd May 2020 and quickly became a hit in Nigeria. All five songs from the EP made it to the top 15 on the Nigerian Apple Music charts, with "You" hitting number one.
In October, he worked with Olamide on a track "Infinity" in the album Carpe Diem, which also topped the Nigerian Apple Music charts. He released his second EP, What Have We Done, on 20th November. All songs from this EP were in the top 12 on the Nigerian Apple Music charts, with "Godly" claiming the top spot.
Omah Lay was recognized in Apple's Africa Rising Campaign on 3rd July 2020, which spotlights African talent. He was also included in BBC Radio 1Xtra's "Hot for 2021" list and was the first African artist to be featured on Audiomack's #Up Now program. Additionally, he was recognized in Montreux Jazz Festival's "20 artists to watch in 2021" and was named BET's Amplified International Artist of the Month in November 2020. At the 2020 Headies Awards, he won the Next Rated award after being nominated in four categories.
On 25th June 2021, he was featured alongside Alpha P in a remix of Justin Bieber's single, "Peaches," by Nigerian producer Masterkraft. He released a new single, "Understand," on 8th July 2021, and collaborated with Bieber again on 3rd March 2022 for the song "Attention." This was their second collaboration.
Omah Lay comes from a musical family. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Didia, have a background in music. His father was a drummer when he was younger, and his grandfather was a musician as well. So, music is a tradition in his family.
