Nathaniel Bassey is a celebrated Nigerian gospel singer, pastor, trumpeter and songwriter. He was born in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, in the year 1981. He originates from Ikot Ofon Ikono, a region in the Uyo local government area of Akwa-Ibom state, located in the South-South of Nigeria.

Background / Early Life 

 

 

His father, Mr. E. Joshua Bassey, served as a pastor at the Bashua Assembly of the Apostolic Church. As a child, Nathaniel developed a keen interest in music, especially jazz, highlife, and instrumental tunes. He drew inspiration from musicians like Rex Lawson, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davies.

 

 

 

Education 

 

 

Bassey attended the University of Lagos, where he studied International Relations and Politics for his undergraduate degree. After this, he traveled to London to deepen his knowledge in Politics. However, his love for music could not be ignored, leading him to study music at a Summer School program at Middlesex University.

 

 

 

Musical Career

 

 

Bassey started his music ministry in 1993, but at first, he was just a regular trumpet player performing jazz at parties and clubs. His career shifted directions when he wrote a song during a visit to Stella Obasanjo, the late wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. He then joined the Rhodes Orchestra, playing the trumpet there for two years. His first album, titled "Elohim," was recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008. This marked a significant step up in his music career.

 

 

 

Hallelujah Challenge

 

 

Nathaniel Bassey, a renowned gospel artist, began the #HallelujahChallenge in June 2017. This was an event where he conducted a worship session from 12:00 am to 1:00 am, which was live-streamed on his Instagram. This initiative quickly gained attention, with over 600,000 views within a month and has now become an annual event that takes place in February.

Bassey is married to Pastor Sarah Bassey, and they have two children. They met in 2008 and got married in 2013. Sarah is originally from Eket, Akwa Ibom State, and she was a part of her church's protocol unit before they got married.

Bassey's work in the gospel music industry has been recognized with various awards and nominations. In 2017, he received the prestigious Best Gospel Artist award at the Africa Muzik Magazine Awards and Music Festival (AFRIMMA). He was also nominated for the City People Music Award for Gospel Artiste of the Year in 2017. His album "Jesus the Resurrection and Life" was nominated for Album of Excellence at the African Gospel Music Awards (AGMMA) in 2019.
