Joeboy was born on May 21, 1997, in the vibrant city of Lagos, located in Lagos State, Nigeria. Before achieving fame, he pursued his studies in Human Resources at the University of Lagos.

 

 

 

 

Career 

 

 

 

The Nigerian music artist Joeboy released a song called "Fààjí" on October 26, 2018, which featured Mr Eazi. He used some of the money from a grant he got from emPawa100 to make a music video for this song. On March 1, 2019, Joeboy released another single, "Baby", which was very successful, with 20 million streams on YouTube and Spotify combined in 2019. The music video for "Baby" got over 31 million views on YouTube.

 

On August 15, 2019, Joeboy released a song called "Beginning" which was produced by Killertunes. The music video for this song had 23 million views on YouTube. The song tells a story about Joeboy falling for a friend who he had initially rejected. 

 

In November 2019, Joeboy released his first extended play record, Love & Light, under the label emPawa Africa. This record included the songs "Baby" and "Beginning", as well as a track featuring Mayorkun called "Don't Call Me" and another song called "All for You".

 

In 2019, Joeboy won the Best Artist in African Pop at the All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival in 2020. He was also nominated for several awards from City People Entertainment and The Headies. 

 

He released a single called "Call" on April 10, 2020, which was produced by Dera. This song, described as a catchy love song by OkayAfrica, was the first single from his upcoming debut album. The music video for "Call", directed by TG Omori, had dystopian sci-fi themes.

 

In January 2021, Joeboy announced his first studio album, Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, which was released in February 2021 and had moderate commercial success.

 

Joeboy released his second studio album, Body & Soul, on May 19, 2023. This album was promoted with four singles: "Sip (Alcohol)", "Contour", "Body & Soul", and "Duffel Bag".

Controversy 

 

 

 

Joeboy found himself in a controversy in October 2022. Asa claimed that Joeboy's recently-released song called "Contour" infringed on her copyright. She alleged that the song's composition was originally recorded by her and the producer, Tempoe, during a recording session in September 2020.

 

Asa's legal counsel sent a notice to Joeboy through mail, which Joeboy shared on his Instagram story on October 3, 2022. The notice stated that Asa demanded the sum of N300 million (Nigerian currency) and gave a 24-hour ultimatum for the song to be removed from all digital streaming platforms. As part of her demands, Asa's management also requested a 60 percent publishing split on the song and a written apology.

 

This controversy revolved around allegations of copyright infringement and the subsequent legal actions taken by Asa against Joeboy regarding his song "Contour."
