Early Life

Oluwadamilare Okulaja, known as Durella (meaning "The Lord has rewarded me"), was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, to Mr. and Mrs. Okulaja. He spent his formative years in Mushin and Ajegunle, completing his high school education at Eyuba Boys Secondary School in Mushin. He then enrolled at Lagos State Polytechnic to study insurance but had to leave due to financial difficulties faced by his family. In a 2013 interview with Compass Online Newspaper, Durella mentioned his intention to return to school, stating, "I still have plans to go back to complete my course but for now, I am focusing on my music."

Reflecting on his tough upbringing, Durella said, "Growing up in Mushin was challenging. The area's reputation made it difficult to invite people over, and relationships often suffered because of it. However, those experiences shaped who I am today, and I appreciate them now."

The nickname "Durella" was given to him by the streets, evolving from the earlier name "Durel." Initially an R&B artist, Durella's single "Why" did not resonate with fans, leading to criticism that R&B was not his true calling.

Career

In February 2006, Durella's career took a significant turn when he met executives from TC Records in Ibadan during a fashion show. A deal was signed a week later. Durella had written his first song at age 13 and released his debut album, "The King of the Zanga", in February 2008. The album, featuring hits like "In the Zanga," "SHAYO," "Gunner's Anthem," "Queen of My Zanga," and "Wiskolo Wiska," was well-received.

In his CompassOnline interview, he described his music as "commercial universal street music," reflecting his roots. Before becoming Durella, Oluwadamilare experimented with singing and rapping, striving to master various musical styles. He credits his mother with significant support during his early career, although he has remained quiet about his father.

Durella considers himself fortunate, given his challenging background. "I grew up amidst hardship and frustration, but I see myself as a lucky artist who has overcome many obstacles," he said.

Regarding claims that he sounds like fellow artist D'banj, Durella disagrees, emphasizing the importance of lyrical content, versatility, and return on investment in distinguishing oneself as a musician.

His talent was recognized when he won the Airtel/MTV Advance Warning Competition in 2008 with the song "Life in Zanga," earning $50,000. He believes this win confirmed his talent and opened new opportunities.

Fame and Setbacks

Durella faced challenges after his last major hit due to poor management by his former record label, Iconic Music. Despite the setbacks, he is optimistic about his future, mentioning that he is working on new music and is now signed to a new record label. "I no longer live in Mushin; I now live in Lekki, and my new label has significantly impacted my career. I have an upcoming album and a fresh musical direction to show my fans," he said.
