Nze Dan Orji (1945–2015) was a celebrated bongo highlife music legend, guitarist, songwriter, and lead singer of the Peacock International Guitar Band. Known by the title “Aku Ji Eshi Obi Ike” (Wealth Gives Confidence) in Orji Town, he was born on December 5, 1945, to the family of the late Mazi Chima Orji of Aro Village in Orji Autonomous Community, Owerri North LGA, Imo State, Nigeria.

Career

 

 

 

 

Dan Orji began his music career in 1957 when he founded the 'Orji Rankers.' In 1970, he left the group to form the Peacock International Band with Raphael Amarabem. Orji served as the lead singer, while Amarabem was the band leader.

 

In 1972, the Peacock Band released their debut album, "Abiriwa", which became a sensation in the early '70s. The hit track, 'Sambola Mama,' dominated the airwaves across the Oriental metropolis of Owerri and beyond.

 

In 1975, Nze Dan Orji went on to form his own group, the Skylarks Band. He later released several popular tracks, including "Jigi Jigi Kpom Kpom" and "Mama Aliche," which have been covered by numerous emerging artists in the music industry.

 

Fondly known as Danny, Orji is celebrated as one of the pioneers of modern Bongo music and will always be remembered wherever Bongo music is discussed.

Nze Dan Orji sadly passed away in the early hours of July 31, 2015 (died at 70 years old), in his hometown of Orji Uratta, Owerri North LGA, Imo State. At the time of his death, he was the founder of the Orji Youths Cultural Dance Group, which trained and empowered many youths in music.
