Early Life

Chief Akunwafor Ezigbo Obiligbo grew up in a small farming village called Nteje, located in Anambra state. As a young boy, he spent his days working on the farm, just as his ancestors had done before him. However, everything took a dramatic turn in 1934 when he had a dream that completely transformed his life. In this dream, Akunwafor saw a new path for himself—one that involved music and a strong desire to protect and promote his cultural heritage.

 Career

Once Akunwafor began performing at local events like funerals and weddings, his music rapidly gained popularity among the people in his community. They were captivated by the profound Igbo proverbs and praise songs woven into his lyrics. As his fame grew, Akunwafor's career received a major boost when he started recording with the Nigerphone Record label in Onitsha. This record label was owned by a well-known businessman of the early 20th century named C.T. Onyekwelu.

Akunwafor's talent didn't go unnoticed by influential figures either. The former Nigerian Head of State, Major General Yakubu Gowon, was deeply impressed by his music and gifted him a 504 Peugeot car as a token of admiration. This recognition from such a prominent figure further elevated Akunwafor's status in the music industry.

 Lineage 

Chief Akunwafor Ezigbo Obiligbo, who was a renowned musician, passed down his musical legacy to his grandson, Ajana. Ajana, in turn, gave birth to Umu Obiligbo, who are now carrying forward their grandfather's love for music. Umu Obiligbo has successfully preserved and promoted the traditional highlife music, ensuring that Chief Akunwafor's musical heritage lives on.
