Abubakari Lunna was a renowned Ghanaian music teacher, drummer, and performer who specialized in Dagbon music and dance. He had an exceptional talent for creating and playing traditional African drums and was widely recognized as a master of his craft.

Lunna was a distinguished teacher at Berklee College of Music and Tufts University, where he inspired and mentored numerous students, including David Locke and Jerry Leake. He also served as the principal Dagomba drummer with the Ghana National Folkloric Company from the 1960s to the 1980s, earning him a reputation as one of the most skilled drummers in the country.

 

Lunna passed away in Tamale, Ghana, in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional musical talent and knowledge. To commemorate his life and accomplishments, the Granoff School of Music collaborated with Tufts University to host "Africa Fest 2009," a celebration of his memory that showcased the richness and diversity of African music and culture.
